The Flathead Valley is an artist’s paradise.
Flathead Valley Community College is located in Kalispell, MT, 30 miles southwest of Glacier National Park, surrounded by alpine lakes and rivers, the spectacular Rocky Mountains and two world-class ski resorts, providing limitless opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast.
Additional opportunities include access to the college’s wood shop and metals facility in the Industrial Trades complex. FVCC also offers a first-class culinary arts program, a superb theatre program and affordable non-credit art classes for all ages. FVCC is also a two-hour drive from Missoula, MT and a three-hour drive from the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Mont.
We are a foundations program.
This means we are a program seriously committed to undergraduate study–preparing freshmen and sophomore-level students for transfer to the university. All of our core curriculum transfer directly within the Montana University System (UM and MSU). We also offer a wide range of advanced classes for non-degree seeking and non-traditional students (these classes will also transfer as General Electives).
Here at the FVCC Art Department we are proud of our students and alumni, and are actually prepared to say that we deliver the best Art Foundation classes in Montana. How can we justify this rather brash claim?
Consider the following:
~Our classes are taught by professional instructors, not graduate students or instructor assistants. All FVCC Art Faculty are producing artists that are actively involved in their fields. We all have offices in the Art Department and are available to our students every day. Overall FVCC instructor – to – student ratio is 16 : 1 (in the Art Department, class sizes are usually capped at a maximum of 15 students) which means smaller class sizes and a more hands-on learning environment.
~Our facility is brand new. FVCC students enjoy spacious studios with plenty of natural lighting (each studio has floor-to-ceiling north facing windows), generous personal workspace, and state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. The FVCC Art Department includes separate facilities for jewelry and metalsmithing, ceramics, 2-D & 3-D Design, printmaking, painting, drawing, photography and graphic design. The college’s Student Art Gallery features exhibits throughout the year showcasing the work of FVCC students, alumni, and visiting artists. But most importantly, our students are not competing with upper-level students for studio resources. Our focus is not research or a graduate program–it is the success of our students.
~Our students are extremely competitive and successful once they transfer to four year schools, and statistically earn higher grades during their first semester at a four-year institution compared with the overall university population.
~FVCC is affordable. Here is a cost comparison for full-time enrollment (12 credits per semester, 2012 fall semester, tuition and mandatory fees only):
|School||In-District||In-State||Out of state|
|U of M||N/A||$2,993.00||$10,539.00|
